Drug Intervention Coordinator Sean Firtel, Coordinator

Starting his sober journey at a very young age, Sean has been around twelve step recovery programs since 1986. When he began his college career as a young sober man he was asked "what do you want to do while you are here at SMU?". His reply was far different than that of his fellow underclassmen as his goal was to start a suicide helpline on campus as there was not one available at the time. Graduating from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelors in Sociology, he strayed from his path of becoming a psychologist to follow his dreams of becoming a great chef. After 17 years in the kitchen and a restaurant under his belt, Sean decided to hang up his apron and reapply all his efforts to follow his dream of becoming a psychologist specializing in addiction therapy.
Since he found his way back into the classroom to pair his life experiences with the final pieces of a formal education and training, Sean has only one class left to complete the Alcohol and Other Drug Studies curriculum at the City College of San Diego and has a 4.0 grade point average and is trying to decide which Masters program for Clinical Psychology he will attend. Sean is a member of the CAADE and CAADC governing bodies and will take both organizations certification exams to become a certified C.A.T.C. and C.A.D.C. respectively upon completion of his final class at City College.
Sean truly understands the pain and hopelessness that the disease of addiction tolls not only on the addict but on all that love and are close with them. His own family has been riddled with addiction so he understands all too well the tale from both sides. Fortunately, he has been joined in his sobriety by two very close family members. His unique outlook on the intervention process from being on both sides of that coin as a loved one and as the addict gives him the inimitable skill set and perspective he needs to exact the most positive outcome possible in every situation. His being sober has blessed him with a life of service and the ability to follow his dreams and realize his true calling to help those that he can that are in need.
